Try The Queen’s Personal Drop Scone Recipe

The Queen

Forget the breakfast of champions! Now you can whip up a right royal breakfast in the comfort of your own home using The Queen’s personal recipe.

The Queen

According to Hello! magazine, in 1960 The Queen sent then U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower a copy of her personal recipe for drop scones (also called Scottish Pancakes) after he and his wife, Mamie, had stayed at Balmoral.

The recipe is quite simple, and the instructions given by Her Majesty include a few of her own personal tips and tricks.

Drop Scones.

Drop Scones Scottish Pancakes

  • 2 Eggs
  • 4 tablespoons caster sugar
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • 4 teaspoons plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

(Serves 16 people.)

According to The Queen’s instructions:

“Beat together 2 eggs, 4 tbsps of caster sugar and 1 tsp of milk; add 4 tsps of plain flour, a second tsp of milk, two tsp of bicarbonate of soda and 3 tsps of cream of tartar. Finally, you should fold in 2 tbsps of melted butter.”

The Queen also recommends the following:

“Though the quantities are for 16 people, when there are fewer, I generally put in less flour and milk, but use the other ingredients as stated. I have also tried using golden syrup or treacle instead of only sugar and that can be very good, too. I think the mixture needs a great deal of beating while making, and shouldn’t stand about too long before cooking.”
