The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Step Out to Pay Respects to Nelson Mandela

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (nee Kate Middleton) stepped out this afternoon to pay their respects to Nelson Mandela.

The couple were, famously, seated in the audience of the premier of the film about Mandela’s life, and had spent a few minutes speaking with two of his daughters not an hour earlier.

It has been reported that when Catherine received the news of Mr. Mandela’s death she broke down in tears, surely having been moved by the film she’d just seen. For his part, William made a quick speech upon exiting the theater. The couple had been informed of Mandela’s passing during the screening, but opted to stay and finish watching the film. Mandela’s daughters, understandably, left the theater as soon as they were told, but requested that the film not be stopped, nor the audience told, until the end.

Today’s outing to South Africa House, where Kate recycled a black suit with small white polka dots that she was last seen wearing in 2007, had The Duke and Duchess sign the condolence book.

The couple are expected to attend another film screening later this evening.
