“Everybody Rise: A Novel” | Book Review

Everybody Rise

After reading Carly’s review of Everybody Rise: A Novel by Stephanie Clifford I quickly zipped over to Amazon and purchased the Kindle edition of the book. And let me tell you, I am so glad I did.

I couldn’t put this book down and I actually stayed up until 1 AM reading it because I was desperate to know how everything ended for the main character, Evelyn.

Taking place in 2006-2007, the book follows Evelyn as she navigates her post-collegiate life in New York during a time of excess when status reigned supreme, just prior to the “Great Recession” kicking off. She and her friends are about 5 years removed from college and nearly 10 years removed from their days at an exclusive New England boarding school. She has just started a job – which she fibbed her way in to by name dropping friends, classmates, and people in the society pages, as the Director of Membership at an exclusive new social network, People Like Us. As she learns the ropes at her job, Evelyn sets her sights on landing New York’s preeminent It-Girl – Camilla – as a member for PLU. She lies (mostly little white ones), connives, deceives to put herself right in the middle of New York society… and the ups and downs of her journey through the upper-echelon of society is compelling and addicting.

As she began working on signing up society It-Girls for memberships, Evelyn also got wrapped up in the glitz and the glamour of their lifestyle and found ways to manage to keep up with them… for a while.

There’s just a few more weekends left of summer and this book is perfect for a final beach read during Labor Day Weekend. Check it out and let me know what you think!
