Moving Day was May 9, and Chuck and I are still not 100% settled in our new home. There are still things that need to be hung up, blinds that need to be purchased (because the previous owners removed every.single.set.), and spaces that need to be filled. So, knowing that we aren’t really done – and that the home will probably always be a work in progress because – life, I’ve decided to use this space to continue updating you all about our home.
I’ll kick this (probably never-ending) series off with an introduction to our first floor!
We actually closed on the house on April 20, so there was some time when we owned the house but weren’t living in it. What were we doing, you ask? Well, we were having the entire interior of the house painted. Every single room got a fresh coat of paint. We weren’t in love with any of the original colors and we decided (okay, Chuck correctly stated and I grumbled about because I knew he was right but I was impatient to move in) that having painters come in would be a LOT easier with no furniture there.
The entire first floor is pretty open, but the previous owners had attempted to designate each “room” by painting it a different color. That meant that in some areas you saw three different paint colors come together, and in one place (between the kitchen and the family room) there was just a line of paint down the middle of the wall. They had the kitchen painted two shades of baby blue (with a DIY picture rail that ended where the paint did – in the middle of the wall), the family room, the two-story foyer, and the bathroom painted a shade of tan-ish brown, the dining room painted a pretty dark brown, the living room (which they used as a playroom) painted pink, and the laundry room painted a bright teal color.
Overall, it wasn’t terrible, but we knew it could look better. Check out the slideshow below to see the photos of the house with its original paint job.

So we decided that the easiest thing to do would be to paint the entire first floor one color and embrace the open floor plan. The laundry room and bathroom, the only two rooms that are definitively their own space, are painted a pretty shade of blue.
After soliciting recommendations from family and our painter, we decided to go with Benjamin Moore colors. The entire first floor, as well as the stairway and upstairs hallway (since the foyer is open to the second level) is now painted Big Bend Beige (#AC-73), while the bathroom and laundry room are painted Brittany Blue (#1633).
The next step to finishing up the first floor was to buy all of the appliances (… because they took all of those, too) and start placing the furniture! Next week I’ll start digging in to the individual rooms and how we decided to arrange them.
