Obviously I’m referring to the sheer panty-hose debate.
{Please note: From here on, I will be referring to “panty-hose” as nylons, because that is what I have always called them, and the word “panty-hose” is disgusting.)
Royal protocol dictates a lot of things. And since it’s been followed for the last 1000 years, it’s kind of difficult to be the jerk who decides “I’m not going to follow it.” As a result, the newest member of the British Royal Family – Her Royal Highness, Princess William of Wales, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, et al, has been seen out and about wearing… wait for it… sheer nylons.
So, there we have it – the newest fashion “It” girl, and her equally paparazzi plagued sister Pippa, wearing sheer nylons (some of which seem to have a little sparkle to them).

Cue the collective groan. I know, I know – they’re awful. No one like wearing sheer nylons. Sure – I wear patterned black tights in the winter with dresses, but that’s because it’s winter – and bare legs in the winter look goofy. Sheer nylons, however, bring me back to being 6 years old and fighting with my mom over wearing them (actually, it was the early 90’s, so it was always white nylons – bleh!), and then inevitably getting a run in them 5 minutes after leaving the house.
The thing is … I don’t hate the sheer nylons look. Their legs look marvelous every time they step out. In fact, I’m pretty sure their nylons give their legs a little bit of a sheen/sparkle that makes them look extra pretty (not in the picture above though), and their skin tone is always even.
Sure – it’s old fashioned, but Catherine is part of the royal family. They are nothing if not old. Their protocol goes back literally 1000 years in some cases. There are rules about how they dress, act, etc. They can’t be photographed eating, women can’t wear open toe shoes, men must wear hats in the Royal Box at Ascot – they’ve probably got hundreds of these little rules. And Catherine certainly can’t be the one who goes against it – she isn’t even really one of them, she’s a newbie!
Will I be running out to purchase a pair of sheer nylons? Probably not. I don’t think they’re something that I need to have in my wardrobe right now. However, if I have a function to attend and I want to make sure I look my absolute best, I might consider it to ensure that my skin tone is all even and pretty looking on my legs.
Let me know in the comments what YOU think of the sheer nylons look. Are you loving it? Hating it? Getting sick of reading about Catherine? Lay it on me!
