New York Fashion Week: Diane Von Fürstenberg

While browsing the shows I haven't been overly impressed. I know, it's sacrilege. Obviously I'll never be able to be a fashion designer – as I would tailor the clothing to fit the models, and not look like fancy pajamas. (I'm looking at you, The Row!) But DvF never fails to disappoint.

Diane von Fürstenberg merges two of my favorite topics into one… fashion and royalty.

Born in Belgium to a Romanian father and a mother who survived Auschwitz, Diana married Prince Egon von Fürstenberg. During her [brief] marriage, her official title was Diane, Princess von Fürstenberg. However, after her divorce and subsequent re-marriage, she was no longer entitled to the use of the style "Princess."

Also, for you royal watchers – she was never styled an HRH, or a "Highness" of any sort for that matter, because her husband's family was not a royal princely family, only a noble princely family of the Holy Roman Empire. Prince Egon's family had ruled over a small principality within the Holy Roman Empire until 1806, and maintained their official princely status until the fall of the German Empire. Upon the fall of the Empire, the family thereafter maintained an aristocratic lifestyle through the ownership of vast estates.

With the encouragement of Egon (albiet after their divorce), Diane launched her company with the introduction if the (now iconic) "wrap dress." And thus – a star was born.
