Eons ago, MTV introduced us to the idea of Reality TV. They kicked things off with The Real World and Road Rules (and their various spin-offs and cross-overs) before moving into more “scripted reality” programs like Laguna Beach, The Hills, and The City. (And who could forget Jersey Shore?!)
Sometime around the time Laguna Beach premiered (which was a result of the short-lived, but amazing and entirely scripted The O.C.), Andy Cohen – from Bravo – decided that what American TV really needed was a reality show that showcased the lives of rich, adult, women in Orange County, CA. (Although rumor has it that he wanted to launch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills first, but those women were too classy and he had a hard time getting enough women to qualify as a cast to sign on for a few years.)
And now – as an alternative for those of us who are sick of listening to grown-women scream at each other on national TV once per week – or who simply aren’t old enough to watch that type of content – Cohen has done it again. Enter, Princesses: Long Island.
This show will basically bridge the best of The Housewives franchise with Laguna Beach. The cast is younger, but just as rich – and just as melodramatic. They embrace their cultural identity in much the same way that the guidos of Jersey Shore embraced their… well… guido-ness.
So what do you think? Is Bravo going to strike gold (again), or have people had enough of the super-affluent whining (and fighting) on their TV screens every week?
