HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, more popularly known as Kate Middleton, christened the newest ship in the Princess Cruises line this morning. The ship is aptly named Royal Princess.
Christening ships is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years in both royal life and for politicians. Queen Elizabeth has christened her fair share of ships throughout her lifetime, as has Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall (Prince Charles’s wife) has also christened a ship since marrying into the royal family.
Incidentally, this is not the first ship that Kate has christened. Her very first royal undertaking, after her engagement to Prince William was announced, was to christen a lifeboat with him.
As always, Kate was impeccably dressed this morning, choosing a Hobbs Dalmatian Print Coat which is now sold out online. You can still find it at other retailers, but you’ll need to act fast!
To compliment the black and white coat, The Duchess wore a black fascinator that we’ve previously seen on her, a white dress (which we can’t see in any of the photos, sadly), and carried a white clutch that looks to be a new addition to her wardrobe.
During her time on board the ship, Kate spoke with the captain, was given a tour, and spoke with various other members of the staff.
Today’s engagement is thought to be the final solo engagement that Kate will undertake before officially beginning her maternity leave. However, she is expected at Trooping of the Colour this weekend, and perhaps at the Order of the Garter service and procession on June 17.
