It’s a sad, sad day. Robin Williams was found dead in his home of an apparent suicide. This is one of those times when I’m shocked by how sad I can be about the passing of a person I’ve never met, and who has no idea that I even exist.
This is also a time when mental illness will be brought to the forefront of our social discussions. Robin Williams was a comedic genius, but even the happiest people on the outside can be in pain. Unfortunately, his struggle became too much for him but if anything “good” can come of this – it’s that people will begin talking about depression, anxiety, addiction, and suicide – and how to help those who may be silently suffering.
If you or someone you know is struggling – please, please reach out. To a family member, to a friend, to a teacher – to anyone, really.
You can also always call the 24/7, 100% confidential National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
And now – to remember Robin Williams at his best – one of my all-time favorite standup comedy routines.
