Rihanna hinted at this trend at the 2015 Met Gala, and now as is often the case in the fashion world – three years later the at absolutely stunning gown has sparked a trend in the slightly more accessible fashion arena. No, the whole world isn’t wearing gorgeous, bedazzled, fur lined robes with killer trains (although… why not?) but the unexpected shade of yellow does seem to be making an impact.
Miranda Priestly put it best in the hit film The Devil Wears Prada as she narrated the trickle down effect of the fashion world using the “lumpy blue sweater” as an example:
But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent… wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.
First, it was an unexpected surprise – Amal Clooney wearing the most gorgeous yellow dress at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (now TRH The Duke and Duchess of Sussex).
Then, we saw Meghan herself show up at one of her royal engagements in a burst of color – a big departure from her usual neutral palette.
Next up, her sister-in-law Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge, wowed the crowd at Wimbledon in a similarly colored sheath dress as she watched the Men’s Final with her husband, Prince William.
And now, to cement the trend (because it’s totally possible that Kate and Meghan were following each other’s royal lead), Kelly Ripa graced television screens this past week.
Not only is goldenrod a lovely, bright shade to celebrate summer, but a slightly more burnt shade – such as the one Kelly chose – can transition into fall as well.
